membrane destillation

Membrane distillation is a thermally driven process mainly applied for desalination applications. The application of a hydrophobic membrane rejects liquid components while volatiles are allowed to pass. This separation principle reaches a theoretical rejection of 100%.

Driving force of the process is the partial pressure difference along the membrane, initiated by the temperature difference of the process liquids. Water molecules start to evaporate and diffuse through the membrane while salts are rejected and stay on the feed water side.

The test bench can provides the following configurations:

  • Direct Contact Membrane Distillation (DCMD)
  • Air Gap Membrane Distillation (AGMD)
  • Vacuum Membrane Distillation (VCMD)
