Description
Development of New Processes for Simultaneous Elimination of Organic Contaminants (Pesticides) and Nitrate from Drinking Water by Means of Biologically Degradable Solid Substrates
Subproject IV
(BAP)
Pesticides are used worldwide in the agriculture as plant protecting agents. Through rainwater infiltration, erosion and diffusion pesticides can discharge into the groundwater. As a consequence, a great risk for drinking water may result.
In this project, the application of biologically degradable polymers for elimination of pesticides and their metabolites from groundwater during the drinking water treatment is investigated. The sorption and biological degradation processes of pesticides on the surface of different polymers are characterised. Furthermore, the release of organic substances from polymers is investigated. Using size exclusion chromatography, the release products from polymers are characterised. The aim of this project is the estimation of the applicability of different polymers for the drinking water treatment.
