Water quality is of fundamental ecological significance and also determines its usability, especially with regard to the production of drinking water. In this context, inorganic main constituents as well as natural organic matter (NOM) such as humic substances, anthropogenic organic micropollutants (e.g. pharmaceutical or pesticides), heavy metals, and engineered and natural nanoparticles (e.g. silver nanoparticles) play a key role. Water quality focusses on pathways, fate, transformations, and impacts of these substances in aquatic systems, applying powerful analytical methods. On this basis, appropriate strategies and approaches for risk assessment and water treatment can be derived.
