Project Description

The goal of the NextGenRoadFuels project is to co-process sewage sludge from treated wastewater, food waste and construction wood waste in single hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) facilities. Hydrothermal liquefaction is a biomass to bio-liquid conversion route that has a liquid bio crude as main product along with the gaseous, aqueous and solid phase byproducts. The aqueous phase byproduct is considered as wastewater and needs to be treated.

Membrane technologies will be used by EBI for an optimal wastewater management focusing on the following three targets:

1. Membrane distillation for separation of valuable volatile compounds
2. NF/RO for the concentration of residual compounds and production of high water quality
3. Estimation of the reuse possibilities of brine and permeate
